The Ayurvedic Tradition of Copper Water

The practice of storing drinking water in copper vessels has a long history within Ayurveda.

Traditionally, water is placed in a pure copper vessel and allowed to rest, often overnight,  before being drunk the following morning. This is known as tamra jal.

Within Ayurvedic philosophy, copper water has traditionally been valued as part of a wider approach to balance and wellbeing.

There is also an interesting meeting point between ancient practice and modern science: copper is naturally antimicrobial, and research has demonstrated that copper surfaces can inactivate a range of microorganisms under appropriate conditions. Copper is also an essential trace mineral required by the human body.

This does not mean, however, that drinking water from a copper bottle should be considered a treatment or source of supplemental copper. We prefer to see it for what it has traditionally been: a simple ritual of storing and drinking water from a natural material that humans have worked with for thousands of years.

Use with plain, room-temperature drinking water only.

Copper reacts readily with other substances, so acidic drinks such as lemon water, juice and other fruit-infused waters should not be stored in the bottle.

It is also unsuitable for hot liquids.

How to Use

• Use for plain drinking water only
• Room-temperature water is recommended

• Not dishwasher safe

Care Instructions

Exterior:
Gently wipe with a soft cloth. The exterior has a food-safe lacquer designed to preserve the printed finish, so avoid abrasive cleaners and vigorous polishing.

Interior:
For periodic cleaning, add lemon and salt with warm water and leave for approximately 15 minutes. Shake gently, empty and rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Do not use chemical cleaners.

Copper naturally changes with time and use. Variations and gradual changes to the interior surface are characteristic of this natural material.
